Stolen From Gypsies

A Novel by Noble Smith

Stolen from Gypsies, Noble Smith's outrageously hilarious first novel, involves a stolen Gypsy baby, a tongue-tied accountant, a rich merchant, the merchant's ravishing daughter, magicians, spells, contracts in blood, pirates, transformations, Dim Avengers, döppelgangers, demons, duels, dicksocks, angels, carnal temptations, imprisonment and redemption. If this sounds like Shakespeare meets Monty Python, you are not too far off. Smith stages his comedic adventure in the early 19th century. Ambrogio Smythe, a hypochondriacal British nobleman, is blessed by childhood memories of Gypsies. Ambrogio leaves his ancestral estate and makes his way to Florence, always aware of the lurking menace of the hated Napoleon Bonaparte. In Tuscany, Ambrogio meets a wandering storyteller, hears a magical yarn about a Gypsy babe kidnapped by a demon, buys a shred of parchment as evidence, and begins to write his own version of the saga, vowing to one day publish it in the finest Morocco leather. Smith has created a historical comedy within a historical comedy that is as absurd and enjoyable as Monty Python's The Holy Grail and Goldman's The Princess Bride. The characters leap off the page in full costume.

Praise for Stolen from Gypsies

". . . full of bawdy humor and slapstick comedy . . . a parody of medieval romance literature . . . . Smith's novel will delight and entertain fantasy readers and lovers of the The Princess Bride and The Black Adder." Booklist (Starred Review)

"Noble Smith's wit and inventiveness, and the astonishing range of his learning, recreates the picaresque novel almost single-handedly, then promptly stands it on its head, all the while reminding us of what real story telling always was, and still can be. The book is a pure delight, and I can't wait to see what Mr. Smith does next." Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn and Tamsin
