What
do you know?
Wisdom for the road ahead.

Edited
by Jeanette Spires Foreword by Stuart Scott
What Do
You Know? Wisdom for the Road Ahead fills a need for a book
by elders in a society grown increasingly stratified by age
group, whether it be seniors escaping to gated communities
in retirement, or youngsters isolated with video games and
the internet. In the past, young people learned from adults,
worked at their side in apprenticeships, and absorbed lessons
in history and morality from their stories. We have lost this
connection.
The people
chosen to provide advice from their own life stories personify
the richness of American life and opportunity: a governor,
a Trappist monk, an opera singer, a news commentator, a cowboy,
an Amish farmer, an acupuncturist-each one of the 53 contributors
brings a unique perspective.
Their
lessons ask young readers to be more curious about other people,
to push through their limitations and take some chances, and
recognize that of all cultures, ours may be the most forgiving
of human error. School gives us a formal education, but to
really understand the road ahead, a student of life needs
to talk to some of the travelers who have proceeded them along
the road of life.
