Small Press Sponsors West Coast Author Tours
February 20, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ashland, Ore Due in part to rising travel costs and reluctant bookstores, the official author tour is increasingly limited to blockbuster authors supported by the big publishing houses. For authors working with one of the thousands of small presses in the U.S., however, the image of a glamorous, multi-city book tour often boils down to a case of books in the trunk during a weekend trip to visit relatives.
Caveat Press, an independent publisher based in Ashland, Ore, has revived the tradition, with three author tours underway in March. The authors each represent one of Caveats three imprints. Caveat Press confronts healthcare issues, providing information and resources that help improve readers quality of life.. The White Cloud Press imprint offers spiritual inspiration, acclaimed translation of religious texts, and descriptive explorations of spiritual practice and faith.. With an emphasis on literary fiction and regional topics, RiverWood Books includes titles covering personal wellness and cultural understanding.
Don Sloan, MD, is scheduled for multi-city tour introducing his recently released healthcare-reform manifesto, Practicing Medicine without a License: the Corporate Takeover of Healthcare in America. Sloan is a medical doctor in New York City with almost four decades experience in private practice. He has published over 85 peer review journal articles on medical issues and the politics of his profession. Sloan will present his compelling arguments in Los Angeles (3/4-3/6), Santa Barbara (3/7), Ventura (3/8), and Bellingham, Washington (3/11).
Angelica Thusius will be visiting the Bay Area, offering lectures and demonstrations based on her comprehensive treatise, Kentro Body Balance: the Secret Pleasures of Posture. The Kentro Body Balance method reveals a radical, delightful secret: Nature designed us to be supple and strong into our old age. Thusius presents her new and innovative approach to posture and painless ease of movement in Emeryville (3/10), Los Altos (3/12), Berkeley (3/14) and Pacific Grove (3/16).
Author Jennifer Ferraro and translator Latif Bolat are covering the Western States in support of their White Cloud Press jewel, Quarreling With God, Mystic Poems of the Dervishes of Turkey, an important new translation of rebel Sufi poetry from the Turkish Bektashi Sufi tradition.
Currently sharing his traditional Turkish music and Quarreling with God in Hawaii, Bolat comes to San Francisco on 3/16 and to Monterey 3/17. Ferraro, a poet and educator living in Santa Fe, NM, is touring in Colorado and Nebraska (3/15-3/18), in the UK (4/6-4/14).
Travel expenses, the time required, and the logistics of booking a series of events makes an author tour difficult, says publisher Gary Kliewer. But we have motivated, professional authors willing to make the commitment. They have important messages to share, so we do all we can to support them.
Caveat Press books are available nationwide through major wholesalers. For more information about the press and the titles mentioned, visit www.caveatpress.com.
