Baltimore, Md.—Who says the death of a loved one means only sorrow for those left behind? Not Sherry Welch, who will sign copies of her recently released book, Doug’s Miracle: A Family’s Journey with Cancer (Caveat Press 2005), on Wednesday, November 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Chapel Lobby of St. Agnes Hospital, 900 Caton Avenue.

The process of dying usually results in turmoil for most families, but Sherry Welch offers her true story of finding joy in even that darkest of places. In Doug’s Miracle, Welch details the comforting power of community during times of crisis. Through emails, she forges an incredible support group to help her and her husband, Doug, through the cancer that ultimately takes his life and the cancer that threatens to take hers as well. By returning to St. Agnes, Welch acknowledges a vital part of the community formed during her own journey. From Doug’s Miracle:

“When facing life and death issues, it is so important to stay focused and positive. The staff of St. Agnes Cancer Center and St. Agnes Hospice allowed us to balance our hope with our reality and our faith with our treatment. They became a part of our extended family, sharing our triumphs and our disappointments and always offering us strength and compassion.”

Sherry Welch is a consultant to nonprofit organizations. She has had a lifelong interest in religion and spirituality, which became her foundation for understanding how living with dying can encompass great joy as well as profound sadness. From Doug’s Miracle:

“An experience like ours becomes less meaningful if we can’t find ways to share what was learned and to offer empathy to others facing similar challenges. Doug’s courage and the way he faced life and death provided many lessons for those who knew him, and I hope they will continue to inspire others.”

Copies of Doug’s Miracle are available through www.caveatpress.com, or by calling 800-380-8286.
