Term Definition
abaya

A jilbab and abaya refer to any long and loose-fit coat or garment worn by some Muslim women. They cover the whole body except the face, feet, and hands. These terms can be used interchangeably depending on the region or culture they are used in.

adhan

The call to prayer chanted from the minaret of mosques.

Aga Khan

The spiritual leader of Nizari Shi‘ism.

Alhamdolil’Allah

All praise be to Allah (God). A term often used by Muslims to express thanks to God.

Allah

The Arabic word for God. In the Qur’an, Allah is understood as the God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus and all true prophets.

ameen

A declaration of affirmation, similar to the word “Amen” found in the Bible.

ayah

A verse in the Qur'an. The Qur'an contains about 6,236 total ayahs.

burqa

A dress which covers the whole face and body.

chador

Mainly used in Iran (chador is a Persian term — originating in Sanskrit - for garment or cloak). A chador is a full-length semi-circle of fabric open down the front, which is thrown over the head and held closed in front.
