Physicans of the Soul

The Psychologies of the World's Great Spiritual Teachers

Robert M. May, Ph.D.
The 20th anniversary release of a revised and expanded edition of the
classic work in religion and psychology by Robert May. Physicans of the
Soul examines the life and teachings of Lao Tzu (Taoism), Moses (Judaism),
Jesus (Christianity), the Buddha (Buddhism), Krishna (Hinduism), and
Muhammad (Islam). In this expanded and revised edition, May includes a
brilliant chapter on Native American spirituality, focusing on the Lakota
Sioux figure of White Buffalo Woman. May examines how each of these great
teachers serve as guides to the greatest human adventure: the quest for
wisdom and the inner search for Self.
Praise for Physicians of the Soul:

"May focuses on the search for the Self among the central spiritual
teachings of the world. The author devotes a chapter each to the life and
teachings of Lao Tzu (Taoism), Moses (Judaism), Jesus (Christianity),
Gotama (Buddhism), Krishna (Hinduism), and Muhammad (Islam). Within each
chapter, he carefully unpacks the seminal teachings of each master and adds
his own experience of each tradition. In addition, he interprets all the
doctrines allegorically so that the reader learns how each doctrine applies
to the search for Self . . . A well written book offering a selected
overview of each of the major spiritual traditions against the background
of the inner search for self." Choice
"I know of no other book that does what Robert May's Physicians of the Soul
accomplishes. If anyone wanted to know more of the inner meaning of the
world's great religions this would be a book to refer to. Written in a
fast-moving style, the author has a knack of making difficult and profound
subjects clear without losing their depth of meaning."
John A. Sanford, author of Mystical Christianity and The Kingdom Within: The Inner Meaning of Jesus' Sayings
"very impressed with Robert May's Physicians of the Soul. The clear,
succinct, and very lively way in which he discusses the world's great
spiritual teachers shows his great ability to present difficult ideas . . .
and make them relevant to people's lives and concerns."
Henri Nouwen, author of Bread for the Journey
