Ümmi Sinan (16th c.)
With a Thousand Remedies,
What Would I Do?
In this world I have one affliction.
With a thousand remedies,
what would I do?
I have but one darling in my heart.
With a thousand lives
what would I do?
Since I attained to this loving,
my life is a sacrifice to the Friend.
My abode is the traceless.
With some corner in space
what would I do?
If love doesn’t overtake me
and scorch me in its flames—
If the fire doesn’t cook me—
with name and fame,
what would I do?
I desire to renounce all
but the pain he gives me.
If he doesn’t give it, even with both worlds—
What would I do?
When love finally found me
I moaned and cried for days.
I found what I was searching for.
With the little that remains,
what would I do?
I became the lover of Love,
I became one with the One;
I became Moses and the mountain—
with God’s distance,
what would I do?
I was heedless.
it came to me as disgrace and loneliness.
My own Beloved taught me what I know.
With the sciences of transience,
what would I do?
Through this affection
I became wealthy in Emptiness.
Holy pilgrimage, alms-giving, reputation,
with these gifts,
what would I do?
The life of Ümmi Sinan
is a living burning testament of Love.
He is a faithful servant—
with rebellion,
what would he do?
