"Running gracefully up from the river and overlooking the business district, long rows of estates stood immune to the torrent. Channeled through the mouths of little gargoyles into a system of gutters, the water cascaded clear of the balconies laced with white grillwork. Water skipped past the framed windows and the tightly-clipped vines fanning up the walls. It spilled bubbling into iron grills, where it disappeared under the street. Up here, the sewer system swallowed water as quickly as the monsoon could deliver it.
