Lasting peace is purely internal—it’s the only peace we can count on. Equanimity: to face whatever is
given and to bring calm to it instead of adding to its turbulence—that is the graceful art of tranquility. It’s an art of finesse, as intricate as the creation of a symphony. Thus peace must also be the art of accepting our own imperfections in its creation and maintenance. Peace is a place to which we endlessly return after straying or being swept away. Being at peace means coming to a stable equilibrium, so that when we’re disturbed, peace is where we naturally return. Even our deepest lasting peace dances and bends, as does a candle flame.
